Unusual plant which grows like a bushy shrub and produces round strawberry shaped fruits that are closer to a raspberry in flavour, though sharper than a raspberry and more sweet and sour mix. Not the pure sweetness of a strawberry.
Grows to approx. 4ft tall and has fine light green decorative leaves. Has thorns similar to a raspberry and stems can be cut back to the ground in winter like a raspberry. If stems are left the plant is deciduous.
Latin name is Rubus illecebrosus and can be known as 'Balloon berry', 'Strawberry-Raspberry'. Happily grows in full sun but also does well in part shade. Originates from China and Japan.
